Savar is not only rich in history but also in education, literature, and culture. Between the 8th and 12th centuries, it was a center for Bengali scholarship, science, and the arts. Buddhist monks and scholars composed, translated, and copied texts, including verses from the Charyapada, within the monasteries of this region. Savar's legacy of learning continues with Savar Government College, an esteemed institution dedicated to academic excellence and community service. Founded on land donated by Priyabala Saha, wife of philanthropist Rakhal Chandra Saha, the college embodies a vision of accessible education. Over the decades, it has grown into a multidisciplinary institution, providing quality education in Science, Arts, Humanities, and Commerce. Today, as a government-recognized college, it plays a vital role in shaping the future of students in the Savar region.
Savar Government College was established in 1967 as Savar University College to meet the educational needs of the rural community. It quickly became a hub for higher learning, attracting students from across the region. Initially offering limited programs, it expanded to include Higher Secondary (HSC), Undergraduate (Honors), and Master’s degrees across various disciplines. The college’s affiliation with the National University of Bangladesh ensured a standardized curriculum and nationally recognized degrees. A defining moment in its history came in 2017 when it gained government recognition, strengthening its infrastructure and academic resources. This transformation allowed the college to enhance its teaching methods, research facilities, and extracurricular programs.
Savar Government College continues to uphold its legacy of academic excellence and community development. Nestled within a scenic campus in Savar Municipality, the college offers modern classrooms, advanced laboratories, an extensive library, and dedicated facilities for sports and cultural activities.
